DTC 01044 can show up in any Control Module in your car if that Module has a wrong software coding. Write down that software code and check/improve it with the help of Diagnostic_Procedures or http://de.openobd.org/ or http://en.openobd.org/
Some B5/3B Chassis Passats around model year 2000 have a firmware bug which causes this DTC in the 19-CAN Gateway module. Service documents for of those cars indicate that this DTC should be ignored in that module.
