Coding

Note: When replacing this Control Module it is necessary to perform the Basic Settings Function Test (MVB 010) and Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor (MVB 020) first. This sets a Readiness Bit for each of the Basic Settings, Coding will not be accepted without having done this first!

Basic Setting

Caution!

  • Do not perform any of these Basic Settings while the brakes are disassembled! Opening, closing, function tests, and otherwise cycling the Electronic Parking brakes should only be done with the pads and calipers properly installed on the rotors.
  • Please follow the procedures EXACTLY. There's a reason for every step. If you skip any prerequisites or other steps here, you are likely to experience "issues" for which no documented resolutions exist, in which case we will not be able to help you resolve them.
  • It is strongly recommended to run a full Auto-Scan first thing to check for any preexisting faults! There have been several reports of repair shops damaging the Electronic Parking Brake System when trying to do rear brakes, but not telling the customer and then sending the car out the door.

Open Rear Parking Brake

Prerequisites:

  • Connect a battery charger as per repair manual. See Special Notes
  • Cycle the Parking Brake ON, then OFF first.

[Select]
[53 - Parking Brake]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 007
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The brake calipers will then open, allowing the pads to be changed.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

  • Turn ignition off.

It is normal for the LED in the parking brake switch and the warning lamp in the instrument cluster to blink rapidly at this point.

The caliper pistons do not move back into the caliper, this is normal.

Close Rear Parking Brake

Prerequisites:

  • Connect a battery charger as per repair manual. See Special Notes

[Select]
[53 - Parking Brake]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 006
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The brake calipers will then close.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

The LED in the parking brake switch and the warning lamp in the instrument cluster will probably continue to blink rapidly. This should stop after cycling the Parking Brake ON, then OFF again.

Function Test

Prerequisites:

  • Cycle the Parking Brake ON, then OFF first.

[Select]
[53 - Parking Brake]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 010
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The brake pads are now opening and closing 3 times.
Wait 30 seconds after the the brakes stop making noise.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor (G251)

Prerequisites:

  • System voltage at least 12.0 V.
  • Car parked on a level surface.
  • Do NOT move/rock car while performing basic setting.

[Select]
[53 - Parking Brake]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 020
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The status of the Longitudinal Acceleration Sensor (G251) is now being displayed.
[Done, Go Back]

Special Notes

  • On vehicles using a separate battery management control module, make sure the charger is connected properly. The proper procedure should be found in the repair manual.
    • Attaching the charger directly to the positive and negative terminals of the battery is Not correct. The battery management module will not see the current flow and shut off power to other modules. This can cause damage to various control modules including the [53] - Parking Brake module.

Special Procedures

Brake Pad Replacement

When replacing the brake pads on vehicles with Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake control modules is is critical that ALL of the Caution and Prerequisite notes are followed as listed above under: Basic Settings.

The following Tech Tip demonstrates the basic steps for working Electro-Mechanical Parking Brake systems:
