Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or problems that may result from following these instructions. They are to be used at your own risk.

Some TCMs support a Kick-Down procedure and others do Not. Check the procedures on the applicable vehicle-specific Wiki pages in the Diagnostic Procedures section or the Factory Repair Manual for additional information.

This procedure details how to perform a Kick-Down Basic Settings which will relearn the TPS signals to the TCM (Transmission Control Module) and ECM (Engine Control Module) when applicable. Some examples of reasons to perform a Kick-Down Basic Settings are:

  • Battery has been disconnected and re-connected
  • ECM has been removed and reinstalled or replaced
  • Throttle Body has been cleaned or removed and reinstalled
  • Accelerator Pedal has been removed and reinstalled
  • After Engine and/or Automatic transmission repairs
  • Fault codes have been cleared
  • TCM has been removed and reinstalled or replaced

Prerequisites:

  • No DTC's in the Engine or Transmission Controller
  • Throttle Body Alignment (TBA) performed successfully when applicable
  • Ignition on, engine off.
  • Battery voltage at least 11.5 V
  • Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
  • Throttle must be at idling position (keep your foot off the gas pedal)

Kick-Down Basic Settings in TCM

[Select]
[02 - Auto Trans]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Set Group to "000"
[Go!]
Press accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and hold for 3 to 5 seconds.
[Done, Go Back]
Release the accelerator pedal.

Special Notes

  • It is normal for there to be no explicit instructions or changes on the screen when you do the above procedure. The transmission controller does not provide any feedback that it has been successfully performed. Checking the measuring block readings after the procedure should confirm a change at 95 - 100% pedal position.
  • If the pedal did not travel to the floor due to an obstructions such as too many floor mats the procedure may not be successful.
  • If faults are stored in the Engine or Transmission for throttle related problems, the procedure will not be successful.
  • When the vehicle is equipped with an engine using the Drive-by-Wire (DBW) throttle system the Engine Control Module may support a Kick-Down Basic Settings as described in the next procedure.
