VW Golf (1K) Steering Wheel
Coding
VW Golf (1K/5K/52) based Steering Wheel control modules used two different communication protocols. Generally speaking most 2010 and older vehicles used the CAN Protocol and 2011+ models use the latest (UDS/ODX) protocol. VCDS will display the protocol type in the upper left hand corner of the Open Controller Screen under the Comm Status.

UDS/ODX Protocol
The following applies to Control Modules using the KWP-7000 (UDS/ODX) protocol.
- Some 2010 and newer M.Y. vehicles use the newest style of UDS protocol modules which are Long Coded. Due to different Control Modules and Equipment in the Car the actual Coding Table is not shown here but will automatically be shown once you access the Long Coding Helper Function using VCDS.
- This type of Steering Wheel Control Module includes the Slip Ring.
Replacement
- Run and save a complete Auto-Scan and save it prior to module removal. See the Online Manual Auto-Scan.
- Code the new module with the Coding from the original module found in the Auto-Scan.
- Clear fault codes in the Steering Wheel module and verify all functions are working as per design.
- Run and save another Auto-Scan and save it. The 03-ABS Brakes and 44-Steering Assist modules may have G85 and/or Steering Limit Stop fault codes that need to be corrected. See Vehicle specific Diagnostic Procedures for Details.
