Determining Immobilizer Version

The Golf/Jetta/Bora (1J/9M) may use Immobilizer II or Immobilizer III. It is necessary to determine which system the vehicle has installed. Some model year vehicles prior to 1999 do not have an Immo system at all.

Immobilizer II

Many 2000-2001 model year vehicles sold in the US/Canada have Immo II and there are other Rest-of-World vehicles with Immo II as well. To identify an Immo II vehicle use VCDS and:

[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
Look in the Extra field. You should see a Single 14 digit Immobilizer ID. There should NOT be a 17 digit VIN number in the Extra field:

Extra: VWZ7Z0W0648696

The 14-digit string is the Immo-ID.
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Note; If in doubt, check the Factory Repair Manual for your specific vehicle.

Immobilizer III

Many 2002 and newer model year vehicles sold in the US/Canada have Immo III and there are other Rest-of-World vehicles with Immo III as well. To identify an Immo III vehicle use VCDS and:

[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
Look in the Extra field. You should see BOTH a 14 digit Immobilizer ID number and ALSO a 17 digit VIN number in the Extra field like this:

Extra: WVZKB58001H231169 | VWZ7Z0W0648696

The first 17-digit string is the VIN and the second 14-digit string is the Immo-ID.
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Note; If in doubt, check the Factory Repair Manual for your specific vehicle.

In some cases, you'll need to check in the Engine in Measuring Block group 081 to see the Immo-ID

Check the Engine Control Unit (ECU) for similar information:

[Select]
[01 - Engine]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Select Block 081.
[Go!]
The first 17-digit string is the VIN. The second 14-digit string in the Immo-ID.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Replacement

If you do NOT have the SKC/PIN information for your vehicle and components then you will NOT be able to do many of the Immobilizer related repairs listed below.

Engine Control Unit (J220) Replacement

Immobilizer II ECU Swapping

Immobilizer III ECU Swapping

Immobilizer (Instrument Cluster) Replacement

Immobilizer Control Module Swapping (integrated in Instrument Cluster)

Immobilizer III Immobilizer Swapping (Instrument Cluster)

Key Matching

Immobilizer II Key Matching (Cluster)|Key Matching (through Instrument Cluster)

Immobilizer III Key Matching (Cluster)

Remote Matching

Remote control operation is Not part of the Immo system. This function is handled by the Address [35] - Central Locking or the [46] - Comfort System module and it is not necessary to perform matching unless the remote has been replaced. Please see the VW Golf/Jetta/Bora (1J/9M) platform page for details.

Special Notes

  • Used keys from another vehicle cannot be matched to vehicles with the Immo III system.
  • Used/Existing keys cannot be matched when BOTH the Cluster and ECM are replaced at the same time with the Immo III system.
    • When only ONE component, such as the Instrument Cluster alone, has been replaced the original vehicle keys can be matched.
