01656 - Crash Signal; Short to Ground

Possible Causes

  • When found in AIRBAG VW71 vehicles such as the 1Y New Beetle Cabriolet the following may apply:
    • Short circuit in wiring to/from Airbag Control Module (J234) and ground.
    • Faulty Fuel Pump Relay (J17) and/or faulty Central Conv. Module (J393)
    • Airbag Control Module (J234) defective

Possible Solutions

  • When found in AIRBAG VW71 vehicles such as the 1Y New Beetle Cabriolet
    • Use the factory level wiring diagrams to check for a short circuit in wiring to/from Airbag Control Module (J234) and ground on the A125 "Crash Data" circuit. Note, all components must be unplugged before connecting a DVOM!
    • Remove the Fuel Pump Relay (J17) and faulty Central Conv. Module (J393) to see if this DTC will clear. If the fault clears, reinstall one of the components at a time to determine the cause.
    • Replace Airbag Control Module (J234) only after the wiring and all components on the A125 spliced circuit are ruled out as possible causes.
