02861 - Electronic Steering Column Lock: Implausible Signal

Possible Symptoms

  • Electronic Steering Column Lock not working
  • Engine not starting

Possible Causes

  • Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Electronic Ignition Lock (D9) faulty
  • Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (J764) faulty

Possible Solutions

  • Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Electronic Ignition Lock (D9)
  • Check/Replace Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (J764)

Special Notes

  • When found in the VW Passat (3C), the Electronic Steering Column Lock can now be replaced independently from the entire steering column. It should not be necessary to replace the entire column when replacing the ESCL (J764).
    • The Comfort Control Module (J393) houses the Immobilizer related Functions. Depending on the Comfort Control Module, it might be possible to reprogram it as opposed to replacing it with the ESCL replacement.
