Audi A5 (8T) Active Steering
This page applies to Address 1B-Active Steering in Audi models such as the A4 (8K), A5 (8T), Q5 (8R) in addition to the newer A6/A7/A8 (4G/4H) models with J792 Component: DYNAMIKLENK.
Active/Dynamic Steering is NOT standard equipment in all of the models listed above. This equipment can be identified using PR Codes such as 1N7 - Dynamic steering or by evaluating the data in the Auto-Scan:
Address 1B: Active Steering (J792) Part No SW: 4H0 907 144 C HW: 4H0 907 144 C Component: DYNAMIKLENK. H06 0100
Address 1B: Active Steering (J792) Part No SW: 8K0 907 144 A HW: 8K0 907 144 A Component: DYNAMIKLENK. H05 0322
Coding
Coding for this Control Module is normally done via Software Version Management (SVM). If the old Control Module is still accessible read/copy it's Coding to the new Module. A Security Access code is required prior to Coding.
Security Access
- 61378 Coding and Basic Setting enabling
Basic Setting
Prerequisites:
- Battery Voltage is 12.0V+
- Key ON, Engine at idle
- No fault codes other than 01087 - Basic Setting Not Performed
- Perform G85-Steering Angle Sensor Basic Settings. One the following pages would apply:
Continue Only after successfully completing the G85 basic settings above
- Leave the steering wheel in the straight ahead position during the next steps (Tolerance: ±1.5 °).
[Select]
[1B-Active Steering]
[Security Access - 16]
Enter 61378, to enable the basic setting.
[Do it!]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 101
[Go!]
[ON/OFF/Next]
- Basic Settings is active.
- If "No Value" is shown in the 4th field turn the steering wheel at a rate lower than 50°/s in excess of 45° using both directions until OK is shown.
- If "OK" was shown in the 4th field continue.
[Done, Go Back]
[Fault Codes - 02]
Check and clear fault codes.Cycle the ignition to confirm the controller is fault free.

Special Notes
- Replacement of the 1B-Active Steering (J792) control module requires Online Coding and Parameterization using SVM (Software Version Management). SVM is a system used by VW/Audi to flash update control modules, and in certain cases, to change their Coding, Adaptation and configure Parameters. VCDS cannot perform SVM.
- NAR (North American Region) market TPI 2029594 may be helpful if coding is not possible when attempting to code a replacement module on the dealer level.
- NAR (North American Region) market TPI 2026507 pertains to DTCs 03221 Safety Lock for Active Steering: Mechanical Failure and 02538 Function Restriction due to Overload. The problem is a faulty steering column lock magnet and a repair kit is available for some models. After the steering column repair kit is installed the software level must be updated via SVM to a level greater than 0580 in the A4 (8K), A5 (8T) and Q5 (8R) chassis. At the time of publication the A6/A7/A8 (4G/4H) models did not require a flash update. Make sure to check the Factory Level Repair Manual for the vehicle in question.
- RoW TPI 2028500 mentions the DTC 02538 in conjunction with specific Freeze Frame details and vehicle production dates to confirm if the document is applicable. When applicable, replacement of the1B-Active Steering (J792) module (instead of flash updating) is mentioned.
