02861 - Electronic Steering Column Lock: Implausible Signal

Possible Symptoms

  • Electronic Steering Column Lock not working
  • Engine not starting

Possible Causes

  • Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Electronic Ignition Lock (D9) faulty
  • Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (J764) faulty

Possible Solutions

  • Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Electronic Ignition Lock (D9)
  • Check/Replace Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module (J764)

Special Notes

  • When found in the VW Passat (3C), it might be possible to replace the Electronic Steering Column Lock (J764) separately from the entire steering column.
    • The Comfort Control Module (J393) houses the Immobilizer related Functions. Depending on the Comfort Control Module, it might be possible to reprogram it as opposed to replacing it with the ESCL replacement. Generally immobilizer repairs on the VW Passat (3C) are performed at the VW Dealer using their GEKO system. Additional information about this system is found here: VW Passat (3C) Immobilizer
    • As of Feb. 2011 the ESCL is a recall on some NAR (US and Canadian) market vehicles. Contact your local dealer if the component has failed to see if this applies to the VIN in question.
